This course introduces students to the complex relationship between Jewish culture and statehood. Focusing mainly on the State of Israel and the French Maghreb, the course will cover topics such as Jewish governance; asymmetrical and coercive religio-political interactions; the colonizers/colonized perspective. During our studies, we will read not only primary sources, but a variety of other resources as well, exploring the historical and philosophical aspects of Jewish sovereignty, from the beginning of the 18th century to the end of the 20th century.
