2nd 8 week course

Jews and Race in the 20th Century will explore how both Jews and non-Jews have thought about the place of Jews in the culturally constructed category of race. We’ll examine the issue in the context of racial landscapes from different times and places, including rise of racial anti-Semitism in early 20th Century Europe, the complicated relationship between African Americans and Jews during the American Civil Rights Movement, and the contemporary tensions in Israel surrounding Ethiopian Jews.
