This course offers an overview of the history and memory of al-Andalus (Muslim Spain), a period in which Islamic rule flourished in Europe, creating a unique cultural configuration. The course is divided in three main units, covering history and society (unit 1); culture, art, religion, philosophy, and sciences (unit 2); and a critical consideration of the role of Muslim Spain and its remembrance in contemporary Muslim, Christian, and Jewish sources (unit 3). Particular attention will be paid to cultural and social aspects, like the intellectual production and the status of religious minorities. All required readings will be in English.
