This course introduces students to the art and archaeology of the Hellenistic World, the creation of Alexander the Great and his successors. We will focus on the monuments and archaeology of the kingdoms that encompassed regions as diverse as Greece, North Africa, Syria, Anatolia, Iran, and Central Asia. We find out what happens when Greek art, material culture, and the traditions of urbanisim (the Greek polis) meets the Middle East.
