Focusing on relatively short texts (in English translation) lyrics (songs), poems, legends, folktales and short stories this course will introduce various forms and sounds of Yiddish creativity from the 16th to the early 21st century. Special attention will be given to symbiotic relations between poetry, singing, written text and its oral performance (including original recordings of some 20th century Yiddish poets, actors, performers; some Yiddish and other films segments).
