How does Israeli inequality compare to inequality in other societies? And how do different axes of inequality in Israel and its territories – along lines of nation (Israeli/Palestinian), gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, etc. – relate to and inform each other? This course uses a sociological, social stratification approach to examine the engines of inequality in Israeli society, and compare them to other stratified societies worldwide. It defines inequality as the unequal distribution of scarce resources like high status occupations or higher education. It then asks which groups in society tend to get more of these resources and why, to what extent people born into lower status groups are able to “move up,” and what role such entities as the school system and segregation play in reproducing or undermining Israeli inequalities across generations.
