In this course, we will explore the variety of ways people have used music to describe, inscribe, symbolize, and editorialize the Jewish experience. It is important to recognize that although we will cover much of our material in chronological order, you are in for more than just a survey in “Jewish music history.” Rather, music will serve as our window into addressing questions of religious, ethnic, national, and historical identity from biblical times to the present.
