Dr. Tamar Arieli is Coordinator of the Conflict Management Program and Lecturer at Tel Chai Academic College and a Lecturer in Political Science at Ashkelon Academic College in Israel.
Early Zionism has left Israel with a legacy of a widespread appreciation of nature together with rapid and problematic development patterns. Early Zionists were not aware of the modern environmental viewpoint, which sees a contradiction between romanticism of nature and its development. Yet, pre-state and early state Zionism should not be stereotyped as a glorified draining the swamps and making the desert bloom. The more complex environmental aspects of Zionism are revealed through many prisms of ideologies, practices and policy, poetry and art with regard to land “redemption”, agricultural and urban development, immigration, forest and desert sceneries and natural resource management.
