Jewish Studies Graduate Students

The Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program at Indiana University is an interdepartmental program. Our faculty are housed in various departments — including Comparative Literature, English, Germanic Studies, History, Musicology, Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures, Political Science, and Religious Studies — where students pursue master’s or doctoral degrees. The Borns Jewish Studies Program offers a Master of Arts degree in Jewish Studies. We also offer a Ph.D. minor in Jewish Studies to students enrolled in Indiana University Bloomington doctoral programs.

Students interested in doctoral study need to apply for admission through the various departments listed above rather than through the Borns Jewish Studies Program.

The Borns Jewish Studies Program provides numerous opportunities for graduate students working in different disciplines to interact and learn from each other through the Jewish Studies faculty-graduate student workshop series and other programs. The JSP also provides extensive fellowship opportunities and other awards for students working in Jewish Studies.

What Our Students are Saying

"As a small graduate program, the Borns JSP fosters an uncommon culture of partnership among M.A. students and Ph.D. minors while offering the interdisciplinary courses and sponsored events of a large university. One example of this mutual support is the thriving JS Graduate Student Association which provides paper readings, an annual international graduate student conference, and faculty-graduate workshops/lunches at least once a month. I have received access to some of the top professors in Jewish studies while gaining rare professional experiences, including teaching reponsibilities and guest lectureships in my first year. The strength of this M.A. program lies in the tight-knit, supportive, and focused academic community nurtured by accessible professors and dedicated staff."
